Lando Norris started on pole with Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton breathing down his neck while Daniel Ricciardo began what may be his final F1 race from 16th on the grid
Max Verstappen limited the damage done to his Formula 1 title defence on a night that belonged to Lando Norris.
But, for all his supremacy, Norris' title bid wasn't set alight as Verstappen crossed the line second to ensure just a single-figure points gain for his closest challenger. And he will be delighted to have achieved that given how worried he was that Red Bull would struggle once again on the Singapore streets.
Norris' record off the line is poor when he starts on pole but he was still leading by the end of the first lap this time after safely seeing off Verstappen's challenge. And he wasn't hanging about, putting his foot to the floor after being told to create a five-second gap to the Dutchman by lap 15. Norris had adhered to the instruction given to him by McLaren, perhaps a little too well. Instead of five, the Briton was nearly nine seconds clear of Verstappen by lap 15, clearly not afraid to use the rubber underneath him to give himself some wiggle room.
