Wales head coach Warren Gatland is leaving his position following back-to-back losses in the Six Nations Championship. The WRU has placed Gatland on gardening leave and will begin searching for a long-term replacement.
Wales head coach Warren Gatland is set to depart his position with immediate effect following a disappointing start to the Six Nations Championship. The Welsh national team has yet to secure a victory in their opening two matches, suffering defeats against Italy and France. According to Wales Online, Gatland's tenure as head coach is coming to an end. The WRU board had previously granted Gatland a reprieve at the end of 2024, a year marred by Wales ' inability to win a single Test match.
He was tasked with revitalizing the team's fortunes in the Six Nations before facing another evaluation at the conclusion of the tournament. However, consecutive losses, a crushing 43-0 defeat against France in Paris and a 22-15 setback against Italy in Rome, have prompted the WRU to terminate his contract. While Gatland's contract was originally slated to extend until the 2027 Rugby World Cup, a break clause allows for his departure this summer. The WRU has opted to place Gatland on gardening leave, effectively removing him from his coaching duties, with official confirmation anticipated today. The organization has initiated a search for Gatland's long-term successor, with current Ireland interim head coach Simon Easterby among the potential candidates. Franco Smith and Michael Cheika are also being considered for the vacant position.
