Also thinking of the first responders working at the scene.The Department of Foreign Affairs is “monitoring” the situation in Washington DC after a US passenger plane collided with a military helicopter, resulting in a number of deaths and prompting a huge search operation.
The UH-60 Black Hawk was assigned to Bravo Company of the 12th Aviation Battalion, which operates out of Davidson Army Airfield at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, Joint Task Force-National Capital Region media chief Heather Chairez said in a statement. The military chopper was believed to have been carrying three soldiers and collided with the jet as it was preparing to land at Reagan National Airport after its journey from Wichita, Kansas.Ice is reportedly forming on the Potomac River as temperatures are expected to plunge below freezing amid a desperate rescue effort to find survivors of the Washington plane crash. The official temperature for Washington is currently 4C, however forecasters believe it will drop further as the night wears on.
Skaters and coaches Yevgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov were named as being on board the American Airlines plane. The married pair won the world championship together in 1994.Meanwhile, a US figure skater has told a Russian media outlet that several Russian figure skaters were on board. He said that 14 skaters from the country were on the flight when it crashed near Washington DC.
