Just a week after the trail officially opened on July 1, I set off for Rathkeale on a dull, but thankfully dry Thursday

Faraway hills are green, as the saying goes, and I’m sure I am not alone in dreaming of glistening white beaches and bustling city streets over the past year.

Part of the Great Southern Trail, the Limerick Greenway extends 39km from Rathkeale to Abbeyfeale, taking in Newcastle West and the villages of Ardagh, Barnagh and Templeglantine.Given that it was a weekday and the greenway had just opened, I wasn’t expecting the high levels of foot and bike traffic, which seemed to really step up a gear from Newcastle West onwards.

His business has been in operation for a decade, and after what he described as a few quiet years, his side hustle is quickly demanding his full-time attention. “It just shows, for any people looking at greenways, the potential for linking up lesser-known areas,” he added. Along the 10km from Newcastle West to Barnagh, traffic went up a notch, with lots of room for cyclists donning full lycra to overtake, or for families ambling or pedalling along to take their time. It was great to see that the trail caters for everyone, young and old, fitness enthusiast or curious day-tripper.

“This is just gorgeous, it’s wonderful we’re just blown away by it,” Mary said, and these sentiments were echoed by everyone I met on my travels.
