Willie Kingston, an 82-year-old environmentalist and organic farmer, was buried on his own land in Inishannon, West Cork. Known for his dedication to nature, Kingston's farm became a sanctuary for wildlife, and he was remembered for his warm hospitality and love of music and good company.
Willie Kingston (82), a passionate nature lover and organic farmer, was laid to rest on his beloved 140-acre hillside farm in Inishannon, West Cork . The funeral service was held in a chapel he built on his property, a testament to his deep connection with the land. Kingston was a true environmentalist, long before the term gained mainstream recognition. He farmed organically for decades, eschewing fertilizers and pesticides, transforming his farm into a haven for wildlife.
Kingston's dedication to creating a natural sanctuary paid off. His farm became a thriving ecosystem, home to rabbits, foxes, hares, badgers, otters, hedgehogs, and a diverse array of birdlife. One of the most striking features of his farm was the nine lakes he created, fed by a local spring. These lakes, along with a cottage he built on an island, became a gathering place for friends and neighbours, where music, laughter, and good company filled the air. In keeping with his deep respect for nature, Kingston chose an eco-friendly water hyacinth coffin for his burial. He was laid to rest in a hillside field he had selected, a spot nestled between a round tower and an underground sun chamber he had built. As the mourners gathered, a prairie dog, one of the species Kingston had introduced to the farm, emerged from its burrow, briefly pausing before disappearing back underground. The funeral concluded with a toast to Kingston's memory, as the setting sun cast long shadows across the field, a fitting tribute to a life lived in harmony with nature
