Tokyo Games veteran Sophie Becker will step into the void as Rhasidat Adeleke focuses on her individual 400m Olympic bid
Ireland were bronze medal winners in the World Relay Championships in the Bahamas in May and then added gold in the Europeans in Rome the following month. As expected, however, Rhasidat Adeleke won't be participating in Friday night's heat/semi-final in Paris.
"Absolutely," said the Wexford athlete. "If we can all run a PB in the relay when we’re running our leg - obviously it’s a split, so it’s a little bit shorter - but if we all can produce a PB or close to a PB, I think something really special can happen." She says that making the 4x400m mixed relay final in the Tokyo Games has caused raised the standard and ambition of the whole team. "Nobody wants to jinx it or nobody wants to get ahead but I think if you look at the facts the women's team was second at Europeans, we have three women in the individual, we have a really strong panel of girls as well," she said.
Becker jokes that she doesn't know why she brought a suitcase full of clothes to go roaming around Paris in. With all her track commitments, she won't have the time.
