A 22-year-old woman from Athenry, Galway, is experiencing immense discomfort due to a six-day power outage caused by Storm Éowyn. Emma Ward relies on both a manual and electric wheelchair, but the lack of electricity prevents her from charging the electric one. The cold temperatures are causing her back, arms, and hips to ache, and she's unable to attend college. The outage is expected to last until at least February 2nd, leaving her in a difficult situation.
A wheelchair user in Galway who has been without power for six days says it’s “absolute torture” as her bones are in agony from the cold.
The young woman told the Irish Mirror: “I’ve been without power for almost a week. It’s absolute torture. I use a manual wheelchair and an electric one, I go between both of them. "The cold is making my body very very sore. I am having to sleep with a jumper, my pjs, a hot water bottle and two extra blankets on top of my duvet.”
As a large tree has knocked down the power cables near her home she fears it could still be days at least before her electricity is restored. According to the ESB website, there are some areas in Athenry where faults aren’t expected to be fixed until February 2.
