Exclusive: The lyric once again sparked controversy but Brian Warfield told the Irish Mirror 'nobody should object' - promising to try to get Kylie to join them at Electric Picnic at the weekend
Wolfe Tones legend Brian Warfield has defended the singing of 'ooh ah up the RA' during the Olympic homecoming in Dublin - and said he'll try to get Kylie Minogue to sing it at Electric Picnic.
And it later emerged that a politician has written a letter to the Olympic Federation of Ireland to express 'shock' over the moment. But Wolfe Tones legend Brian Warfield, who is no stranger to controversy surrounding the line from the iconic Wolfe Tones ballad Celtic Symphony, told the Irish Mirror that the ballad trio have been ‘saying and singing it for years’ and to ‘let people sing’.
Traditional Unionist Voice Carrick Councillor David Clarke wrote to the Olympic Federation of Ireland and the director of BBC Northern Ireland following the incident claiming he was “shocked and appalled” by the chant. “You can sing ‘Up the Ra’ but that’s what it is, it’s a Celtic football song at the end of the day. They pick out one line as usual, you know the story, it is more or less to demonise the song or the Wolfe Tones.”
