‘Your whole life stops in those three seconds’ Daring dives off a 27m-high bridge in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina belong to one of the oldest traditions in Europe – one which has not been interrupted by wars, invaders or pandemics
People dived from the remains of the bridge even when it was demolished in the 90s.
The importance that locals attach to these dives is underlined by Lorens Listo, one of the most successful divers of all time.“In Mostar, there was always an unwritten rule that the one who didn’t dive from the Old Bridge is not a real Mostarian,” says Listo, who has won a total of 13 first places in head dives. He performed his first competitive dive from a bridge at the age of 19.
“I got goosebumps when you asked me what the dive looked like and I relived it now. It cannot be described in words. That adrenaline, courage and pride. You fascinate whole crowd of people, you feel proud, and that impresses every man,” says Krnjić, who trained on the Cijevna River in Tuzi in Montenegro, and his father and mother are also divers. It is extremely important to overcome the fear of heights and injuries because this is the key to a successful dive.
