Multiple social housing projects planned for vacant sites across Dublin are at risk after the McVerry Trust withdrew due to financial difficulties. The council is seeking new providers for the sites, but some face an uncertain future.

A number of derelict and vacant sites across Dublin city, earmarked for social housing development by the McVerry Trust, are now facing uncertainty. The trust has withdrawn from building six social housing projects, citing financial difficulties and governance issues. These projects, which were to be funded by the Dublin City Council, included sites on Fishamble Street, Halston Street, Sherrard Street, Shaw Street, Echlin Street, and the Weir Home on Cork Street.

The council has secured new housing providers for the Fishamble Street and Halston Street sites, but the remaining sites remain unallocated. The Fishamble Street site, adjacent to the Civic Offices, has been vacant for over 70 years and has seen multiple failed redevelopment attempts. The council had planned to use the site for a modular apartment scheme, but rising construction costs led to the project's cancellation. The Iveagh Trust has now stepped in to take on the development. The Shaw Street site, located behind O'Neill's pub, has been vacant since the demolition of a terrace of houses to make way for the loopline rail bridge in 1889. Despite securing planning permission for 12 apartments in 2020, the project has not progressed. The council is now reviewing the project with an alternative approved housing body. The Weir Home, an Edwardian building in the grounds of Ireland's oldest remaining Quaker cemetery, was previously used as a mental health facility but has been vacant since the 1970s. The HSE plans to sell the property if no state body expresses interest. The trust had initially intended to convert the building into about 20 apartments, but the transfer never went ahead.
