Aer Lingus has reopened its renowned Future Pilot Programme, offering aspiring pilots an exceptional opportunity to launch their careers with the airline. This fully-funded program, open to applicants with no prior aviation experience, will train and recruit 90 pilots over the next five years. After a rigorous selection process, successful candidates will embark on a 14-month training course that seamlessly blends theoretical knowledge with practical application.
This comprehensive training will take place at a prestigious international pilot academy commencing in September 2025. Upon completion of their initial training, students will return to Aer Lingus' Training Academy in Dublin to continue their development. Throughout this phase, they will receive invaluable mentorship and support from an experienced Aer Lingus Liaison Pilot. Upon successful qualification, they will be awarded a multi-crew pilot's commercial licence, setting them on a trajectory to become a first officer and eventually a captain on both short-haul and long-haul routes. Aer Lingus is actively encouraging female applicants to help bridge the gender gap within the aviation industry. While currently, 11% of Aer Lingus pilots are female, a figure considered industry-leading, the airline is dedicated to further increasing this representation. Anne Kiely, Aer Lingus Chief People Officer, stated: 'Aer Lingus has a long-standing and proud tradition of pilot training, offering Future Pilot Programmes for nearly sixty years. Successful candidates will embark on an exciting and rewarding career, flying Aer Lingus customers to a diverse range of destinations. Furthermore, they will have the opportunity to operate some of the most modern aircraft in the industry. We invite everyone with a passion for aviation to apply for this unique programme, and we especially encourage women to join us as we strive to close aviation’s gender gap.' Competition for this program is anticipated to be extremely high. Candidates must be over 18 by the closing date and possess a Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualification, including at least two higher-level subjects with a minimum grade of H5. Other essential criteria encompass fluency in English and the ability to successfully pass medical and security checks. Captain Karl O’Neill, Aer Lingus Chief Instructor, emphasized their search for individuals with outstanding communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. He elaborated on the program, stating: 'Aer Lingus' Future Pilot Programme is a fully-funded pilot training course that offers successful applicants the opportunity to realise their dreams of a career in aviation. We’re looking for candidates who possess excellent communication, problem-solving and teamwork skills. We particularly encourage women with these skillsets to consider applying. Previous successful candidates have come from a diverse range of careers and backgrounds and are now forging exciting new careers in the sky. All successful candidates will receive the most advanced industry-leading training. In addition, they will receive constant mentoring, guidance, and support throughout their training and careers. We look forward to welcoming our 2025 Future Pilot Programme candidates, who will play a vital role in shaping the future of our airline.' While prior experience is not mandatory, the airline seeks motivated and engaged individuals with a genuine passion for aviation and the Aer Lingus brand. A spokesperson noted: 'Whether you have just finished school/college or simply want to change career, this could be the right move for your future. Many of our pilots have joined us from other industries, and we urge you to consider doing the same. We are looking to attract talented people who are motivated, engaged and passionate about aviation and the iconic Aer Lingus brand. If you are technically minded, mature, responsible and committed to succeed then maybe a career in aviation is for you. To secure a place on this course, you need to be highly motivated and must demonstrate the competencies required to become a commercial airline pilot. You will need to possess excellent communication, problem-solving and teamwork skills, as well as an appreciation of the service our customers expect. We are searching for candidates who are willing to balance a fast paced, technically challenging and dynamic environment, with safety and exceptional customer service.'
