Ryanair Extends Check-in Deadline to Ease Airport Congestion

Ryanair is extending its check-in and bag drop closing time from 40 to 60 minutes before departure to allow passengers more time to navigate airport security and passport control, aiming to reduce missed flights. The change affects approximately 20% of passengers who check bags and includes the installation of self-service kiosks.

Ryanair has announced a major change to its check-in procedure which will benefit one in five passengers, according to the airline. The budget airline has revealed that from November, it will begin closing its check-in and bag drop services 60 minutes prior to passengers' scheduled departure, which is an increase from the current 40-minute deadline.

Ryanair has made the decision to allow for more time for passengers to proceed through airport security and navigate passport queues which should reduce the number of passengers who may miss their flight's departure. Ryanair anticipates that 20 per cent of its customers will benefit from the change as this is the average amount of passengers who check in their bags prior to boarding.

Ryanair CMO, Dara Brady, said: 'From Tues 10 Nov next, Ryanair customers will see airport check-in and bag drops close 60 minutes before scheduled departure, instead of today’s 40 minutes.

'This will allow these 20% of our customers more time to clear through airport security and passport queues, and get to their departure gate on-time, especially during busy travel periods when some of these airport queues can be longer. 'We are also installing self-service kiosks at over 95% of Ryanair airports before October.

'This means a quicker bag drop service, less queuing at airport desks, and an even more punctual service for the 20% of our customers who still wish to check-in a bag, while the 80% will be unaffected by this small 20 minute change, as they will continue to check-in online before they arrive at the departure airport and they go straight through airport security to their departure gate.
