Slattery, who was born on November 9th, 1959, was a contemporary of notable figures like Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry, and Hugh Laurie at the University of Cambridge.

He served as the former president of the improvisation group Cambridge Footlights and had recently been touring a comedy show in England while also launching a podcast. Slattery's career spanned both film and television. He appeared in several notable films during the 1980s and 1990s, including Neil Jordan's crime thriller 'The Crying Game', 'Peter's Friends' alongside Laurie, Fry, and Thompson, and the black comedy 'How To Get Ahead In Advertising' with Richard E. Grant. On stage, he received an Olivier Award nomination for best comedy performance in 1995 for his role in Tim Firth's play 'Neville's Island', which later became a film starring Timothy Spall. He also starred in the Second World War-set production 'Privates On Parade', based on the film of the same name, as the ace impersonator Captain Terri Dennis. Slattery was open about his struggles with bipolar disorder and addiction. He released the BBC Two Horizon documentary 'What's The Matter With Tony Slattery?' in 2000, which explored these issues with him and his partner, Mark Michael Hutchinson, visiting leading experts on mood disorders and addiction. He had previously participated in the 2006 BBC Two programme 'The Secret Life Of The Manic Depressive' to discuss his condition.
