Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly discusses Ireland's efforts to attract and retain more healthcare workers both from overseas and locally, emphasizing the importance of local training and international cooperation in healthcare.

Ireland has been described by Stephen Donnelly , Minister for Health, as an attractive destination for healthcare workers from overseas. He aims to increase the number of healthcare workers in the HSE (Health Service Executive) by another 6,500 between now and the end of next year. Donnelly highlighted the benefits of a new contract for doctors globally, both those trained in Ireland and elsewhere.

He emphasized that the State has an obligation to train and retain enough doctors, nurses, and therapists locally, while also contributing to the developing world. The number of healthcare college places is expected to be doubled, with an increase of around 1,100 in the lifetime of this Government. Donnelly also pointed out that Ireland should try to ensure a greater percentage of medical students are from the European Union, arguing that there are too many non-EU students in medical schools
