An elderly patient who went missing from a hospital in Mayo walked six miles in the rain wearing a gown before being found in a ditch by a member of the public last weekend.
The man was discovered by two locals in a remote rural area around six miles from Castlebar. He was found in a confused state in a ditch beside a country road, unable to get out after falling backwards. It’s not the first time that an incident of this nature occurred involving patients from Mayo University Hospital.
He left the hospital wearing only a vest, pyjama bottoms and slippers in temperatures of between -2 and four degrees. His body was retrieved from a river in Castlebar two days later.
