The officers are part of a major new crackdown on street crime
Garda bosses are sending almost 100 new officers to help police the streets of Dublin – just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, it has emerged.
We have established that 31 new officers will be sent to Pearse Street on the south side of the city, while 29 will be deployed to Store Street on the other side of the Liffey. Both stations cover inner city Dublin – where low-level street crime has been a particular concern for several years. But that places a massive burden on Garda resources in the city - and the new officers will be thrown in at the deep end as they help police the capital on the big weekend. A further 52 officers graduating from Templemore Garda College in Tipperary this Friday will be deployed to stations all over Ireland.
He said in a newspaper interview last week that he believes more Garda visibility in the capital will lead to residents and tourists alike feeling safer. He has already devised a plan, in consultation with Commissioner Drew Harris, for the fight against street crime – and the new officers are a key part of it.
