The Ulster Council has reinstated Antrim's request to play their championship quarter-final against Armagh at their home ground, Corrigan Park, after initial concerns regarding capacity led to a planned neutral venue.
The Ulster Council has reversed its decision to move Antrim 's All-Ireland quarter-final championship match against Armagh from Corrigan Park in Belfast to Páirc Esler in Newry. The initial decision had been made due to concerns over Corrigan Park 's capacity to accommodate the anticipated crowd, especially given Armagh 's first championship appearance following their All-Ireland victory.
However, after a meeting of the Ulster Competitions Control Committee, the game is now set to take place at Corrigan Park on April 12th. Antrm manager Andy McEntee expressed his relief and admiration for his players for their steadfast stance in advocating for the game to be played at their home ground. McEntee emphasized the importance of the decision for both the players and the county board, who stood in solidarity with the team. He acknowledged the potential consequences the players faced, including possible exclusion from the Tailteann Cup, but lauded their determination to fight for their right to play at home. He believes their unwavering conviction was ultimately justified. McEntee dismissed any notion that playing against the All-Ireland champions in their own backyard would require extra motivation, stating that this scenario is a privilege and an opportunity for his team. Veteran player Paddy McBride, present at the Ulster championship launch, echoed McEntee's sentiments, assuring that the venue debate had not been a distraction for the team. He highlighted that their focus remained on the task at hand, and the decision ultimately brought excitement and enthusiasm for the upcoming challenge. McBride further emphasized the symbolic significance of the game being played at Corrigan Park, underlining its impact on aspiring young players in the local community.
