Former US president BarackObama. celebrates his Offaly roots on St Patrick's Day

Former US president Barack Obama posted a heartfelt message for St Patrick’s Day reminiscing about his trip to the town of Moneygall in Co Offaly.

Obama’s roots in Ireland go back to 1850, when Falmouth Kearney, the 19-year-old son of a local shoemaker, left Moneygall to begin a new life in the US. He said in a post on Twitter: “In 2011, I visited the tiny town of Moneygall and got to walk around in the house where my great-great-great grandfather Falmouth Kearney lived his early life.

“I'll always be grateful for the warmth and generosity of the Irish people. Happy St. Patrick's Day! -Barack O’Bama”On Obama’s presidential visit to Ireland in 2011 he said: “My name is Barack Obama, of the Moneygall Obamas, and I’ve come home to find the apostrophe we lost somewhere along the way.”Our Irish Mirror Sports Page - which brings you all your Irish and UK sports news - can be found here. The Irish Mirror Twitter account is @IrishMirror while our sports page is @MirrorSportIE.
