A manufacturer of a life-saving breast cancer drug is withdrawing its product from Britain after row over NHS funding 🔴 Exclusive from cahalmilmo

The withdrawal of Herzuma raises the possibility of a squeeze on supply to NHS patients of a drug which has proved remarkably successful in treating HER2+ breast cancer, a form of the disease affecting about one in five patients. The five-year survival rate for women treated with trastuzumab, the scientific name for Herceptin and its off-patent equivalents such as Herzuma, now stands at 97 per cent.

Manufacturers of so-called generic or bio-similar medications – copies of drugs whose patents have expired, which account for four out of every five medications used by the NHS – complain that the current level of the levy is wiping out razor-thin profit margins.

But several high-profile pharmaceutical companies, including Sandoz, one of the world’s biggest generic and biosimilar manufacturers, have already suggested it is not “economically viable” to supply new medicines to the NHS. Sandoz, which operates two sites in Britain, said it was “highly unlikely” it would build new manufacturing capacity in the UK to produce newly off-patent drugs.
