An unexpected spell of rain and wind has prompted weather warnings for the Canary Islands, a popular destination for Irish tourists during the February mid-term break.
Irish holidaymakers planning trips to Spain for the February midterm break might need to pack their raincoats instead of sunglasses, as the Canary Islands are facing a series of severe weather warnings. Spain is a perennial favorite for Irish tourists, drawing thousands of visitors during school holidays. However, an unusual bout of wet and windy weather has prompted weather advisories for the islands.
The latest forecast predicts heavy rainfall and dangerous waves, a far cry from the typical sunny conditions associated with the popular holiday destination. The Spanish national meteorological agency, AEMET, issued a warning stating, 'From Monday to Wednesday, the Canary Islands will experience strong or very strong gusts of wind. Showers are more likely on Monday and Tuesday in the western islands, and coastal warnings are in effect for Tuesday and Wednesday.' AEMET also noted that this Atlantic weather system will bring occasional showers to mainland Spain. A Status Yellow rain warning is currently in place for Lanzarote, anticipating 'short but intense showers' with up to 15mm of rainfall possible in a single hour. Furthermore, Lanzarote, along with La Palma, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, La Gomera, and El Hierro, are under Status Yellow coastal warnings. These warnings predict wave swells reaching 4 to 5 meters and offshore winds ranging from 50km/h to 61km/h.Holidaymakers are urged to monitor local weather forecasts closely and take necessary precautions. The unpredictable weather conditions could disrupt outdoor plans and beach activities over the coming days. Meanwhile, Ireland is bracing for its own stormy weather. Met Eireann has issued a warning that the weather will become unsettled, with 'frequent wet and breezy spells.' Weather maps indicate a series of Atlantic weather fronts moving in later this week, bringing heavy rainfall and strong gusts of wind.
