The Air Dome at Connacht GAA’s Centre of Excellence in Co Mayo was damaged during Storm Éowyn, but plans are already underway for its reconstruction. The Sigerson Cup final will still take place at the venue, but on an adjacent pitch. The Dome is expected to be rebuilt as soon as possible with potential design adaptations to withstand future severe weather events.

The Air Dome at Connacht GAA ’s Centre of Excellence in Co Mayo suffered damage during Storm Éowyn . The storm hit the Bekan facility on Wednesday, prompting provincial council officials to announce immediate plans for rebuilding the destroyed Air Dome . The Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup final between UCD and DCU will still take place at the venue on Wednesday evening, but on Pitch Two, which is adjacent to the Dome pitch.

Despite the damage, the site has been cleared of debris and repairs to the Dome’s artificial pitch allowed camogie’s Ashbourne Cup decider to be played on it last weekend.Connacht’s Coaching and Games manager Cathal Cregg expressed relief that the damage was contained, stating, “We were probably lucky in terms of the trajectory of the wind, it didn’t affect the (main) building or the grass pitches.” He added that the Dome is fully insured and the focus now shifts to the upcoming Fitzgibbon and Sigerson Cups. The rebuild will commence immediately after these competitions conclude. While Cregg couldn’t provide a precise timeframe, he assured that the process would be expedited. He revealed that meetings with engineers have already taken place over the past week, indicating a determined effort to have the Dome restored as soon as possible. There are possibilities for adaptations to the Dome’s design, including features that would permit its disassembly in anticipation of severe storms in the future. Meanwhile, the Sigerson Cup final promises an exciting clash between two strong contenders. UCD, seeking their first victory since 2018, will face off against DCU, who last won the title in 2020. The two teams previously met in round two of the competition, with UCD narrowly prevailing by a single point. Both sides boast impressive rosters of county talent. UCD features notable players like Daire Cregg and Ben O’Carroll from Roscommon, Sam Callinan from Mayo, Cormac Egan from Offaly, and Killian Roche, the goalkeeper from Laois. DCU will rely on the leadership of Dublin’s Lorcan O’Dell and Greg McEneaney, Sligo’s Luke Marren, and Leitrim’s Tom Prior.
