The 88-year-old won All-Irelands both as a goalkeeper and a forward.

A five-time All-Ireland winner, he played both in goal and attack for Kerry and also represented the county hurlers with distinction.

As a player, he won his first All-Ireland as a corner-forward in 1955 as Kerry beat Dublin in the final though a knee injury sustained while on Railway Cup duty for Munster the following year was a factor in his eventual transition to becoming the county’s goalkeeper. He then took over as manager, steering Kerry to the 1972 All-Ireland final which they lost to Offaly after a replay and won three National League titles but, with Cork getting on top of them in Munster, he stepped aside after the 1974 provincial final.
