John O'Shea is only the interim manager, but are the FAI ready to wave goodbye to him after tonight?
If the script is to be believed, John O’Shea will wave goodbye after tonight’s clash with Switzerland and become a manager elsewhere.
We only believe that because of Marc Canham’s declaration that ‘existing contractual obligations’ have prevented the FAI revealing that person’s identity up to now. Even O’Shea’s tone at yesterday’s pre-match press conference suggested every door in the building was being left wide open - by all parties - for another couple of weeks at least.
There’s a danger of reading too much into one scoreless draw against Belgium and yet on the pitch and behind the scenes, it has been a very happy camp up to now. “But I know in my head what I signed up for at the start and whatever happens after the Switzerland game will happen. O’Shea worked alongside Wayne Rooney at Birmingham City before now, and at Reading and Stoke City before that. He was part of Stephen Kenny’s Ireland staff in 2023, too.
