A black and white lurcher was discovered chained and abandoned on wasteland in Cork city two weeks after it went missing from an animal shelter. Gardaí found the distressed dog without food or water and are investigating the theft.

A dog, a black and white lurcher, was found chained up and abandoned on wasteland in Cork city two weeks after it vanished from an animal shelter in another part of the county. The distressed animal was discovered by Gardaí during a search operation on Monday morning. It was discovered tethered near housing without any food or water, its ribs and spine visibly protruding.

Gardaí are continuing their investigation into the theft from the animal shelter while ensuring the unfortunate dog gets all the care it needs. In a social media post, Gardaí detailed the discovery: 'While conducting a search operation in Cork city this morning, Gardaí found this lurcher dog chained up on wasteland near a residential area. The abandoned dog was very distressed and had no food or water. 'After making a few enquiries, it turns out the dog had been stolen from an animal shelter in County Cork two weeks ago. 'The dog has since been moved to safety and is currently getting all the food, water and belly rubs necessary!' Gardaí in Cork continue to investigate the circumstances of the theft in January, reports Cork Beo. This incident follows a string of similar cases in recent years. Last year, a dog was found chained to a gate in West Cork with her litter of puppies before being taken in by the West Cork Animal Welfare Group (WCAWG). In October, a woman in Ballincollig was reunited with her cherished Maltese-Yorkshire Terrier a day after it was stolen from her car. A bystander reported seeing an individual hastily departing from the car with a small dog under their arm. The puppy, christened Teddy, was discovered alone in a deserted building, with no sign of the culprits. In 2023, a man in Portugal discovered that his newly acquired husky had been illicitly transported from Ireland, prompting him to initiate an international search for the original owners.
