Warmer weather is just around the corner but for now we're still in the midst of cooler days and cold, cough and flu season - Dr Brian King tells parents how they can help their children fight any illnesses going around
It’s cold, cough and flu season and any parent knows how much a bout of illness can wreak havoc in their household.
Is there any way to keep our children free of coughs and colds? Unfortunately, there’s no way to avoid catching illnesses entirely, especially in an environment like a classroom. But we can minimise transmission – the basics are handwashing, covering your mouth and nose if you sneeze or cough, and don’t go to social events or school with children if they have an illness, because that’s how they spread.
How can we minimise the symptoms of colds and flu? If they have a temperature, you can give them ibuprofen and paracetamol, be it through Calpol, Nurofen or Paralink Suppositories. Be sure you administer the dose based on their weight because you don’t want to underdose or overdose them. If they’re nasally congested, saline drops or spray into the nose can be very helpful. If your children are over 12, pseudoephedrine can be another option as well.
Can vitamins or supplements help to combat colds and coughs? With a well-balanced diet, most children will get their vitamins naturally. Generally, there’s no major evidence that children who take multivitamins get sick less than those who don’t. If you think your child may be lacking in any vitamins, you can talk to your GP. You should consult with your GP before starting your child on any supplements.
