A Cork hotelier raises the alarm about drink spiking after his son becomes the victim of a targeted attack while out with friends. The incident highlights the growing concern about safety in social spaces and the urgent need for increased awareness and preventative measures.

Nights out are a popular way to socialize and enjoy time with friends, but recent reports of drink spiking in pubs and nightclubs have raised serious concerns about safety in these environments. This alarming trend underscores the urgent need for increased awareness and preventative measures to protect individuals from harm while enjoying a night out.

Cork Hotelier John Gately is publicly raising the alarm about the dangers of drink spiking in city late bars after his son's drink was tampered with during a recent outing. Speaking to Neil Prendeville on Cork's Red FM, John shared his son's disturbing experience, calling it 'every parent's nightmare'.He explained that his 21-year-old son, Tom, sent a text around 1:30 am saying he was going to get a taxi home soon. However, around 10 minutes to 3 am, John's wife received a panicked call. According to John, Tom was completely disoriented and had no recollection of how he ended up near exposed water. The only thing Tom remembered was feeling a jolt in his glass while crossing the room in the pub, suggesting someone had tampered with his drink. The effects of the spiked drink kicked in suddenly, with John stating that Tom felt fine one minute and disoriented the next within 20 minutes. He left the pub seemingly normal, saying goodbye to his friends, but then his condition deteriorated rapidly.Upon arriving at the hospital, John and Tom discovered that they weren't alone. There were five other students in the A&E waiting area, three of whom had also experienced drink spiking that same night at the same pub. While medics took a urine sample from Tom, they did not conduct blood tests. John is determined to follow up on the results and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. The next morning, Tom was suffering from a severe headache and nausea, but thankfully, he was recovering. John described Tom as a strong and capable young man, making this incident even more shocking. He urged everyone, especially those heading out for a night of fun, to be vigilant about their drinks and stay with their friends. John expressed profound fear for his daughters and questioned the motives behind these attacks. He wonders if the perpetrators are simply seeking amusement or if there are more sinister intentions at play
