A motorist in Ireland was apprehended by Gardaí for exceeding the speed limit by over 60km/h while also testing positive for cocaine and cannabis. The incident highlights the ongoing efforts to improve road safety in the country, which include the implementation of new speed limits this week.
An Irish driver was arrested for speeding over 60km/h above the limit while under the influence of drugs. The driver was caught by Gardaí from the Mayo Roads Policing Unit traveling at a staggering 166km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N17. A roadside test revealed the presence of both cocaine and cannabis in the driver's system, leading to their immediate arrest. A court date has been set for the driver.
A Garda spokesperson commented on the incident, stating: 'This bank holiday our Mayo Roads Policing Unit were carrying out speed checks on the N17 in Knock when they detected this car travelling at 166km/h in a 100km/h. They were stopped and the driver tested positive for cannabis and cocaine. They were arrested, court to follow.' This arrest comes amidst a push for improved road safety in Ireland, with new speed limits officially coming into effect this week. The reduced limits, aimed at minimizing accidents and promoting safer driving practices, include a significant decrease in the default speed limit on rural local roads from 80km/h to 60km/h, effective this Friday, February 7th. New road signs reflecting these changes will be installed nationwide, replacing existing ones. The Rural Speed Limit sign, previously indicating 80km/h, will now signify a maximum speed of 60km/h.
