Drogheda United were underdogs against Derry City but came out deservedly on top in Sunday’s final.
It took 11 years, but a bloodied Ryan Brennan finally got redemption for his 2013 FAI Cup final defeat by helping Drogheda United see off favourite Derry City at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday.
And that was the plan, according to Brennan, who said: “I think if you play in the opponents’ half, you have a better chance of winning the game.“We play to your strengths and percentages. You’re not going to win a game if they have possession in their own half. For us, it was taking the opportunities and digging in.”
“We have been through the wars over the last couple of years. To get the win and to have this medal around my neck, I’m very grateful.” The Bray game mentioned above is next Saturday’s promotion/relegation play-off decider, a game that will decide whether Drogheda will play in Europe next summer as a Premier or a First Division team.
