Thompson (43), who is serving a life sentence for the Kinahan Hutch feud murder of Daithi Douglas, is now set to go on trial in July

Convicted killer 'Fat' Freddie Thompson has agreed to have his assault trial heard before Tullamore Court - after flagging fears for his safety.

Appearing via video link before Portlaoise Circuit Court on Thursday, Thompson thanked Judge Keenan Johnson after his trial was granted to go ahead in Offaly - and that he may attend in person. Asked how long the trial may be, the Prosecuting Counsel William Fennelly said: “I’m always slow to make a prediction Judge. It concerns an incident in the prison and depending on how much is an issue certainly it could run four to five days.”

“Sorry your honour I’d like to be brought to the court. Bring me to the court,” he said. Judge Johnson made an order for the accused to be transferred from the prison to court on the dates of the trial. In the affidavit, Thompson said: “I say and believe Mr Douglas was a member of the Hutch crime family. I say and believe that because of my conviction, that my life is in danger and that there is a direct threat on my life from the Hutch crime family.
