Victor Kohring, a former Wasilla legislator who was caught up in a corruption scandal that roiled the state Legislature more than 15 years ago, died Tuesday in a head-on crash.
recordings of conversations between Kohring and executives at Veco showed Kohring solicited bribes from the oilfield services company and took action to benefit the company while serving in the state Legislature.
“Kohring repeatedly agreed to lobby his colleagues and, if needed, cast votes in VECO’s favor on a key petroleum production tax proposal pending before the Alaska legislature,” the Justice Department said in a 2008 statement. “In exchange, Kohring received multiple cash payments and solicited a $17,000 payment.”
An appeals court later vacated the conviction and ordered a new trial, citing material withheld by the prosecution. In 2011, Kohring pleaded guilty as part of a plea agreement to a charge of conspiracy to commit bribery. He was sentenced to time previously served.Alaska Public Media contributed to this report.
