Police in Cork, Ireland have identified a male suspect in the murder of Paula Canty, a young mother who was stabbed to death in her apartment. Officers initially responded to a 999 call reporting self-harm but discovered a horrific scene, leading to the investigation being upgraded to murder. Ms. Canty's funeral arrangements are pending as tributes pour in for the 'lovely young lady'.
Gardai have identified a chief suspect in the murder of a young woman who was stabbed to death in a north Cork apartment.
It is understood officers have since focused their investigation on a male suspect known to Ms Canty - following unfounded claims to gardai that she had harmed herself.However, after finding her lifeless body and a horrific scene, officers immediately began to suspect that Ms Canty had in fact been brutally murdered.
Another added: "Sorry to hear of a lovely young lady passing away. Her whole life has been taking away from her And leaving a young family behind here. Deepest sympathy to her mother and her kids and the rest of her family We will keep ye in our prayers at this sad time. May Paula rest in peace." Ms Canty was previously known to gardai and had 137 previous convictions - including one for burglary and 83 for theft. In November of 2022 she was convicted of breaking into the home of an 85-year-old man. Judge Helen Boyle imposed sentence of three years, with the last year suspended, at the time.
"A post-mortem examination has been carried out by the Assistant State Pathologist and preliminary results have been provided to the investigating team. Details of these results are not being released for operational purposes," a garda spokesperson said.
