A young girl who was seriously injured in a knife attack in Dublin has made significant progress in her recovery, taking her first steps since the incident.
A young girl who suffered serious injuries in a knife attack on Dublin's Parnell Square has made significant progress in her recovery, her family announced. The six-year-old girl, who was five at the time of the attack on November 23, 2023, spent several weeks in paediatric intensive care and over 370 days in hospital before returning home.
Her family shared an update on Saturday, revealing a major milestone: the girl stood up for the first time since the incident, assisted by two physiotherapists. 'Yesterday was a major day: our little girl stood up for the first time,' the family wrote on a GoFundMe page. 'Assisted by two physiotherapists, one on each side, she planted her two feet on the ground and stood tall. The physios said she was putting weight on her legs, which is a good sign.' The family also highlighted other advancements, including progress in her arm and hand movements, neck control, and back strengthening. 'We have been home since the end of November, and the progress has been great,' they shared. 'Being around her everyday has been rewarding. It is full-on dedication, even with help, but this is what needs to happen right now. Let us keep powering through.' The attack in Parnell Square East also injured two other children and a creche worker. Following the incident, a riot erupted in Dublin city centre. A 50-year-old man, Riad Bouchaker of no fixed address, has been charged and appeared before a Dublin court in connection with the attack. He is accused of attempting to murder the two girls and a boy, as well as assaulting the creche worker causing serious harm. Additional charges include three counts of assault causing harm and possession and production of a 36cm kitchen knife.
