Ireland becomes 'Republic of Compo' after State pays out almost €700m in 2 years

So far this year the State has paid out €14.7m in compensation

Ireland has become the 'Republic of Compo' after the state paid out a staggering €678.6m in damages over the past 25 months, newly published data has revealed.

The biggest awards were for medical mistakes and negligence incidents in the health service where €496.2m was paid out in compensation. The second biggest area was for Exposure to Psychological hazards, as the term is defined, where €53.9m was paid out. Another €1.9m was given to those exposed to biological hazards and €841,000 issued to a category referred to as ‘Other’ which covers some property damage.
