Meteorologists predict a prolonged period of wintry weather for Ireland, with freezing temperatures, scattered precipitation, and potential snowfall across certain regions, particularly in the east.

Winter's chill is set to continue in Ireland , with a 'cold and breezy' week ahead and snow forecast for some areas. Met Eireann predicts overnight temperatures will be around freezing or close to freezing in the early part of the week, which, combined with rainfall, could lead to wintry falls, especially in the east. On Monday, February 10, higher ground in Dublin and Wicklow may see the greatest risk of snow or sleet. A Met Eireann spokesperson said: 'Today will be cold, dull and breezy.

Patchy outbreaks of rain and drizzle will occur, especially across eastern counties, turning wintry over the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains later. Highest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees with an added wind chill factor, owing to a rather brisk east to northeast wind.' READ MORE: Taoiseach Micheal Martin says no more cost of living packages or energy credits in next budget 'Cold tonight with frost and ice setting in where skies clear. Patchy outbreaks of rain and drizzle will persist, especially across eastern and southern areas with the chance of the odd hail or sleet shower too. Lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees in a mostly light northeasterly breeze.' 'Some bright or sunny spells at first on Tuesday with any frost and ice clearing. However, it will be mostly cloudy with patchy falls of rain and drizzle, especially across east and southeast counties with just minimal amounts elsewhere. Later in the day, more general rain will arrive into southwest counties, possibly turning wintry over higher ground here after dark. Rather cold with highest temperatures of 5 to 7 degrees in a light to moderate easterly breeze. Cloudy with some scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Lowest temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees, coldest further west, all in a mostly moderate easterly breeze.' Of Wednesday, they added: 'Cold, dull and breezy with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle, some wintry falls locally. Highest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees in a fresh southeast breeze, coldest away from southwest counties. A cold night on Wednesday night with further scattered falls of rain and drizzle, driest across eastern areas. However, extensive cloud cover should diminish the potential of a significant frost. Lowest temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees in a moderate southeast breeze.', reports the Irish Mirror
