Met Eireann predicts a sharp drop in temperatures and wintry weather as Ireland welcomes 2025.
We're heading into a brand new year, and there will be a steep change in the weather as things are set to get fairly frosty. Temperatures will plunge to a freezing -4 in the coming days, with wintry showers expected on higher ground. Towards the weekend, Met Eireann have even raised the possibility of snow in parts of the country.
In their forecast for the end of the week, Met Eireann have written: 'Current indications are that for a rather unsettled weekend with outbreaks of rain, possibly turning to sleet or snow, and blustery winds. It will remain cold overall but temperatures are likely to recover towards the end of the weekend.' Before then though, here's everything you need to know about the weather forecast for the beginning of 2025. New Year's Eve Further scattered showers across Ulster and north Connacht tonight. Elsewhere it will be cloudy and rather wet with spells of rain at times, heaviest and most persistent in the south of the country. The rain will clear southeastwards overnight but lingering in the south and southeast until around dawn. Turning colder overnight with lowest temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees with fresh to strong southwest winds, veering west to northwest overnight. New Year's Day Any overnight rain will clear quickly from the south early on Wednesday morning. It will then be a fresh and bright day with sunny spells and scattered showers, the showers most frequent in the west and north. Some of the showers may turn wintry in the north later in the day. Highest afternoon temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees in fresh west to northwest winds. Frost will set in quickly after dark. Very cold with a northerly breeze overnight.
