Storm Eowyn, a rare 'weather bomb' event, is set to batter Ireland with life-threatening winds and widespread damage. Met Éireann has issued a series of red weather warnings, urging the public to prepare for severe impacts including power outages, fallen trees, and dangerous travel conditions. The storm is expected to cause a rapid drop in air pressure, leading to explosive cyclogenesis and gusts exceeding 130km/h.
A rare weather phenomenon known as ' explosive cyclogenesis ', also called a ' weather bomb ', is expected to occur with the arrival of Storm Eowyn in Ireland late on Thursday night and into Friday morning. The UK Met Office has published a graphic explaining the phenomenon, which involves a significant drop of air pressure in a short period of time.
Such an event will lead to damaging gusts of wind, prompting Met Éireann to issue a series of red weather warnings that will affect every county in the Republic of Ireland at some point from 2 am on Friday morning to 3 pm on Friday afternoon. Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather described the anticipated drop in pressure as 'crazy', having earlier in the day said that Eowyn would be a 'historic storm'. In preparation for the storm, Met Éireann has urged people to ensure their mobile phones are fully charged in the likely event of mass power outages. It warned: 'The Electricity network is expected to be severely impacted, the public are advised to prepare for the arrival of the storm including ensuring their mobile phone is fully charged to enable communication.' Met Éireann added: 'This level of winds have the potential to pose a threat to life and property, so the public is advised to shelter in place under any red level warning, and limit travel to essential only and shelter in place as much as possible under any orange warning, as there will be extremely dangerous travelling conditions, fallen trees, and power outages expected broadly.' The national forecaster has outlined the following risks that everyone should prepare for
