Galway boxer John Cooney is in critical condition after suffering a severe brain injury during a title fight in Belfast last weekend. Cooney, 28, lost his first professional fight in the ninth round against Nathan Howells and was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital where he underwent surgery for an intracranial haemorrhage. On arrival at the RVH it was discovered that Cooney had suffered an intracranial haemorrhage and he underwent immediate surgery to relieve the pressure on his brain. He remains in a critical condition in the hospital's intensive care unit. A number of high-profile figures from the Irish sporting world have shown their support for Cooney following Saturday's bout, with Olympic boxing hero Michael Carruth sending a heartfelt message to the injured fighter.
"He's a fighter and he has got a fighter's chance in that regard and hopefully he is going to be OK and get back to his family."
