Irish households will receive a €125 credit on their electricity bills in January 2025 as part of the government's efforts to alleviate the cost of living crisis. The credit will be automatically deducted from bills and is aimed at helping families manage rising energy costs.

Households in Ireland will get €125 off their electricity bills over the coming weeks in a bid to help with the cost of living crisis. The energy credits were announced as part of the Budget in early October and continue a trend over the last few years as the Government aims to address the cost of living crisis and rising energy bills in particular.

As part of the Cost of Living package agreed as part of Budget 2025, the coalition agreed to sign off on two energy credits worth €125 each, or €250 in total. The scheme applies to every household electricity account holder in Ireland, an estimated 2.25 million properties, with the money due to be deducted automatically from your bill at source. Households do not need to apply for it and they do not need to contact their electricity supplier. The first €125 credit was paid to electricity customers in November, while the second and final energy credit will be applied to accounts from today (January 1) and will be seen by householders over the January to February 2025 billing cycle. The date you receive your credit depends on the date that your supplier normally sends you your bill. The credit may not appear on your first bill during these payment periods, this depends on your individual billing cycle. Suppliers have information on their websites with the exact dates the credit is shown on customers’ bills. Although all households are eligible for these credits, certain criteria must be met in order to receive the €125 as it has been confirmed that properties with very low levels of use will not automatically get the credits. If your property does not pass the low usage threshold, then the home will not be eligible for the €125 January energy credit
