The gangster (70) is accused of sending drugs to Ireland from his Spanish bolthole and faces a sentence later this year if convicted

John Gilligan today speaks of his fears he will die in prison – as he faces the threat of being locked up in Spain.

Gilligan – who has been involved in criminal activities for more than five decades – tells Mr O’Toole that he now regrets his career of robbing and stealing and would stay away from crime if he was starting his life again. “It doesn’t pay,’ he says. “I’d imagine life is better without crime. And with crime, there’s too many ups and downs. There’s more downs than ups.

Gilligan was released from Portlaoise Prison in October 2013 and claims other inmates wanted to have a party for him, but jail bosses “‘No, Brian, you killed everything we had. I know about you now. I’ll do nothing with you. If you could make me twenty million, I’d have nothing to do with ya,’ I said.

You miss all your family: your wife, your children, your mother, your father, brothers and sisters. You’d miss your freedom. I had a few very good-looking young girls visit me. I’d be talking to them on the mobile phone in the prison and they’d say, ‘Can I come And then another plan was: a fella on a big motorbike and a fella in a HiAce van were going to come down. But the police weren’t going to let them up to the prison door. My brother had to prove who he was when he came down to get me. But they were going to get the fella to get off the motorbike and hand me a helmet.
