King Charles III has canceled all upcoming engagements after experiencing temporary side effects from ongoing cancer treatment. The monarch briefly visited a hospital for observation and, on doctor's advice, postponed scheduled events. This comes after previous cancellations of the royal couple's Vatican visit due to Pope Francis's health.
King Charles has cancelled all upcoming engagements after experiencing “temporary side effects” from his ongoing cancer treatment . Buckingham Palace released a statement on Thursday evening to say the King had a brief trip to the hospital this afternoon where he required “short observation”. The 76-year-old Monarch, who was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in early 2024, has now returned to Clarence House where he is said to be taking work calls, the BBC reports.
However upcoming events which the King planned to attend have been postponed. Buckingham Palace said in a statement: 'Following scheduled and ongoing medical treatment for cancer this morning, The King experienced temporary side effects that required a short period of observation in hospital. His Majesty’s afternoon engagements were therefore postponed. 'His Majesty has now returned to Clarence House and as a precautionary measure, acting on medical advice, tomorrow’s diary programme will also be rescheduled. 'His Majesty would like to send his apologies to all those who may be inconvenienced or disappointed as a result.' A spokesperson for the royal family added: 'His Majesty was due to receive Credentials from the Ambassadors of three different nations this afternoon. Tomorrow, he was due to undertake four public engagements in Birmingham and is greatly disappointed to be missing them on this occasion. “He very much hopes that they can be rescheduled in due course and offers his deepest apologies to all those who had worked so hard to make the planned visit possible.' Earlier this week the King and Queen suddenly cancelled a much-anticipated state visit to the Vatican to meet Pope Francis. The Royal couple were due to visit Italy from April 7, with a meeting with the pontiff — who has been experiencing health issues himself —planned. However, the encounter was said to be delayed by mutual consent to allow Pope Francis more time to recover from double pneumonia. Buckingham Palace released a statement saying: 'The King and Queen's State Visit to The Holy See has been postponed by mutual agreement, as medical advice has now suggested that Pope Francis would benefit from an extended period of rest and recuperation. 'Their Majesties send The Pope their best wishes for his convalescence and look forward to visiting him in The Holy See, once he has recovered.
