Munster Technological University (MTU) to name its Kerry campus sports hall after Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh, a legendary Irish sports commentator.
Munster Technological University ( MTU ) is set to honor the legacy of legendary Irish sports commentator, Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh , by naming the sports hall on its Kerry campus after him. Ó Muircheartaigh, who passed away last June at the age of 93, was deeply connected to his native county of Kerry, despite living elsewhere for several decades. He was laid to rest in Dingle, a testament to his enduring ties to the region.
The naming of the sports hall is a fitting tribute to Ó Muircheartaigh's contributions to both Kerry and Irish broadcasting. The university, formerly known as IT Tralee, had previously recognized Ó Muircheartaigh's achievements by awarding him a fellowship in 2009. He also actively supported the college's sports academy, which opened in 2019 on the north campus in Tralee. His name now graces the sports hall, solidifying his connection to the institution and its commitment to athletic excellence. The official naming ceremony will take place on Thursday, with former Kerry footballer and broadcaster Dara Ó Cinnéide serving as the master of ceremonies.Professor Maggie Cusack, president of MTU, stated, 'The naming of the main arena in the Kerry Sports Academy is a fitting tribute to Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh, a true Kerryman, a great Irishman and a legend of Irish broadcasting.' This honor recognizes Ó Muircheartaigh's profound impact on Irish sports commentary and his lasting legacy as a beloved figure in his home county.
