91 candidates competing for 40 seats

Ninety-one candidates have entered the race for the 40 seats on Fingal County Council. The council covers parts of north and west Dublin, including large population centres Swords and Blanchardstown, and has seven local electoral areas. It is currently controlled by Fianna Fáil, the Green Party, Labour and Independents.

Sinn Féin, with 15, is running the largest number of candidates among the parties, followed by Fianna Fáil , Fine Gael and Labour . The Green Party is fielding seven candidates. People Before Profit – Solidarity is running six candidates, while the Social Democrats have five candidates and Aontú four. The Irish Freedom Party is fielding two candidates while there is one candidate representing Independents4Change, The Irish People and the National Party.

There are 19 non-party candidates seeking election, including one candidate who is running in two local electoral areas. Thirty-nine of the outgoing 40 councillors are seeking re-election, with Cllr Natalie Treacy of Sinn Féin instead running in the Dublin City Council area.Candidates say it is mainly local issues such as housing, access to GP services – with many practices closed to new patients – a shortage of places in secondary schools and access to autism services that are being raised at the doorsteps. Some said immigration was an issue in the background but is not being raised generally.
