Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control, but, sadly, the man was pronounced dead at the scene

The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service responded to reports of a fire in the Greenan Road area close to Poyntzpass shortly before 4.30am on Wednesday morning.

"Police can confirm that a man aged in his 60s has died following a fire at a residential property in the Greenan Road area of Poyntzpass in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday 26th February," a PSNI spokesperson said in a statement. "Firefighters were called to reports of a house fire at 4.25am this morning . Two appliances from Banbridge Fire Station and 1 Appliance from Newry Fire Station attended the incident.
