A man named Ryan English was apprehended near the US Capitol Building carrying a folding knife and two Molotov cocktails, allegedly intended to harm prominent politicians Mike Johnson, Pete Hegseth, and Scott Bessent. Prosecutors allege that English intended to kill these politicians and potentially burn down the Heritage Foundation.

A man, identified as Ryan English in court documents, surrendered to authorities near a Capitol entrance on Monday. Federal prosecutors allege that English possessed a folding knife and two Molotov cocktails intended to harm prominent politicians Mike Johnson , Pete Hegseth , and Scott Bessent . Prosecutors claim that a search of English revealed two 50ml bottles filled with Absolut vodka and stuffed with torn clothing, which they characterize as destructive devices.

Authorities also report finding a folding knife in his possession. Further searches of English's vehicle unearthed another, larger bottle of vodka and a gray sweatshirt believed to be consistent with the material used in the makeshift Molotov cocktails. English reportedly stated that he left his Massachusetts home with the intention of killing Johnson, the US House speaker, and Hegseth, who recently received Senate confirmation as defense secretary under a potential second Donald Trump presidency. According to evidence presented to a federal court in Washington, English referred to Hegseth as a 'Nazi.' He also allegedly expressed a desire to assassinate Bessent, Trump's newly appointed treasury secretary, after learning of Bessent's Senate confirmation on Monday. Investigators suspect that English may have also planned to set fire to the Heritage Foundation, a conservative lobbying group that supports Trump and is located near the Capitol. Prosecutors assert that English was aware of the potential consequences of his actions, including his own death, and had written a note of apology to a loved one. English faces charges of unlawfully transporting a firearm and bringing an incendiary device to the Capitol
