A man in his 60s died after an altercation at a residence in New Ross, Wexford. Another man was arrested in connection with the incident.

Gardaí were questioning a convicted criminal on Tuesday night after a man died following a fight in Wexford . Officers were waiting on the results of a post-mortem into the death of the man in New Ross early on Tuesday morning – but sources indicated he may have died of natural causes. They said it was possible the man, who was in his 60s, died of a heart attack unconnected to the altercation. The man died after an incident in a house in the Cluain Fada estate in the town early on Tuesday.

Sources say the man had earlier been involved in an altercation at the house. He and another man, who was arrested nearby, had both suffered injuries as a result of the incident. The man was found unresponsive by Gardaí and paramedics and he later died at the scene. Officers from New Ross Station who were investigating the incident arrested a man in the area – on suspicion of assault. He was being held in the town’s Garda station on Tuesday night – and can be detained for up to 24 hours. Sources say the man is a low-level criminal who has more than 50 convictions. He was recently released from prison, The Irish Mirror understands. The area was sealed off on Tuesday night – as Gardaí awaited the results of a post-mortem. Sources said the results of the post-mortem would decide the next step in the investigation. A Garda spokesman said the man was found in the house at around 11am on Tuesday. He said: “Shortly after 11:00am, Gardaí and emergency services responded to an incident at a residence in Cluain Fada, New Ross, where the man was found unresponsive. He was pronounced deceased at the scene a short time later. “A man in his 30s was subsequently arrested in connection with the incident at a nearby location. He is currently detained at a Garda station in the Eastern Region under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984”
