Met Eireann has sounded the alarm over an 'unusual' event that's expected to last at least five days. It comes as the latest weather forecast indicates that Ireland is in for a miserable weekend.

Met Eireann has issued a five-day warning about the risk of floods as “unusually high tides” threaten to wreak havoc in coastal areas.

It comes as Ireland is set for a damp weekend, before a brief weather turnaround next week. Giving a day-by-day breakdown of what to expect this Saturday and Sunday, a Met Eireann forecaster said: “Mostly cloudy Saturday with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle, most frequent in the east and south. Some mist about also. Highest temperatures of 6C to 9C in moderate to fresh east to northeast winds. Unusually high tides will bring the possibility of coastal flooding for all coasts.

It’s not all bad news, as the national forecaster said the weather will turn drier for a time early next week.
