Met Éireann says winds will reach storm force 10 for a time on Sunday before a u-turn in the weather heading into Christmas week
A status orange storm warning has been issued by Met Éireann ahead of an anticipated change in the weather and much calmer conditions in Christmas week.
READ MORE: WATCH: Church spire in Clare crashes to the ground in flames after being struck by lightningThe warning comes after a wild Saturday night and Sunday morning in parts of the country, with Status Yellow wind warnings remaining in effect for Clare, Kerry and Limerick until 3pm on Sunday and for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo until 2pm.
Thankfully, conditions are set to become a lot calmer for anyone travelling home for Christmas in the coming days, with Met Éireann promising a “relatively mild” week with “a lot of dry weather overall” and just occasional spells of rain and drizzle. It’s more of the same on Stephen’s Day and through to next weekend, although there is the possibility of more “persistent rain and drizzle in parts of west Connacht and west Ulster” on Thursday, with Met Éireann warning of “a weather front threatening to encroach from the west”.
Cloudy and misty on Monday night with some scattered patches of light rain and drizzle at times as well as some hill and coastal fog. Temperatures won't fall below 8 to 11 degrees in mostly moderate westerly winds, backing southwesterly, becoming a little fresher in northwestern coastal parts.Christmas Eve will continue mostly cloudy, but it'll be dry apart from a little patchy light rain and drizzle here and there. There'll be some mist and hill and coastal fog too for a time.
