Mum shot dead by monstrous ex lay overnight with unharmed baby cradled in her arms
Life had moved quickly for Karlyn Ramirez since she’d dropped out of university to join the US Army at the age of 21. At first, her family weren’t so sure about her decision to enlist, but knew Karlyn would make them proud, like she always did.
By the August, Karlyn was based at Fort Meade, Maryland, while Maliek was hours away in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Karlyn, 24, was raising their four-month old daughter alone in a home off base in nearby Severn. It was a callous and shocking murder. It became clear the shooting had happened the night before, so Karlyn’s baby had been left alone overnight, and could have died too.
But officers kept returning to Maliek as a suspect. Karlyn hadn’t been sexually assaulted – it had been staged to look that way. Nothing had been stolen and Karlyn had no enemies. Dolores explained that Maliek had driven to his wife’s home the night of her death with a revolver she’d given him. At Maliek’s trial in 2018, the prosecution said he’d killed his wife to escape his tempestuous marriage. Dolores also told the court he was angry over the split. ‘If he couldn’t have his family back together, no man was going to raise his daughter,’ she said.
Dolores said she didn’t think Maliek would have gone through with the murder, and when she found out, she admitted she should have done something about it.
