'When it comes to the future, we’re no longer scared of it, and we can’t wait to see what is next for our beautiful little girl.'

She loves feeding ducks, petting the animals at the local farm and going to the swimming pool.During the day, at the park, she’d have me push her for hours in the swing if I let her, and every night in bed, she makes me re-read Little Miss Muffet over and over, doing all of the actions each time.

I have to admit then, though, we didn’t think too much about the risks in real terms. We were too excited. Then, when Jasmine was born, there were various complications. She had two holes in her heart, cataracts on both of her eyes and doctors remarked on her low muscle tone. ‘I’m so sorry, we have some really bad news,’ he said, before confirming her diagnosis. I really wish he hadn’t used those words.

Already though, the first hurdles were fast approaching, as at four weeks, then seven, she had operations to remove her cataracts. Then, when she was three months old, she needed open heart surgery to close one of the holes. It was entirely informal, with parents gathered together in a church hall, having cups of tea and coffee, while the children bounced around in the soft play. But it really changed everything.
