The stunning lights, which have captured the attention and admiration of humans for tens of thousands of years, could be strongly visible tonight in parts of Ireland
The Northern Lights have been spotted in Irish skies this week, and may be visible again tonight if the conditions are right.
Donegal Weather Channel says: "Following on from the earlier update today which can be seen below one of the biggest CMEs of the solar cycle is currently heading towards earth with a direct hit expected in the next 24 hours with G4 to G5 storm conditions highly likely. G5 storm conditions are Extreme and would lead to the Aurora been visible countrywide and overhead which is rare in Ireland," reports Cork Beo.
Met Eireann has predicted reasonably clear skies over much of Ireland tonight, so the combination of these conditions could make the lights more visible than usual. The colours of the auroras change due to the type of gas particles that are colliding at any given time. The west and north coasts of Ireland are the best spots to catch a glimpse of this natural spectacle, especially in areas with little light pollution - the further away from a big city the better.
